Single Mass Forms

Form & Finish with Primary Solids

This initial series of Single Mass Forms was a study in perfecting balance and form. Taking ideas from architecture on how form is the primary element in all successful designs, I wanted to become well versed in this subject before moving on to more complex designs. The Single Mass Form series started with small objects, allowing me to focus on minute details, and slowly grew into large forms forcing me to learn new techniques that would accommodate the increased scale. By finishing each piece with single tone glazes, it allows the eye to focus on the overall balance of form.

Form is an inclusive term that has several meanings. In art and design, we often use the term to denote the formal structure of a work—the manner of arranging and coordinating the elements and parts of a composition so as to produce a coherent image. In the context of this study, form suggests reference to both internal structure and external outline and the principle that gives unity to the whole.
